Signal measurement says 10.480 snr no fish in the red bits! It took me a while to find it but I did it by hand. It's just a tick
further east than 19.3 and a shade lower. If you have patience you'll get it ! Good reception even in rain. Thanks

Lost the BBC channels like most of us (80cm dish), although I feel that perhaps with professional alignment it might have been possible to get them back with no (or only a small) dish-size upgrade. Instead I went for an Elliptical 100cm x 120cm dish and 0.3dB Invacom Twin LNB. I now have 100%/80% signal strength/quality and that's without any kind of professional alignment. I'm sure it's not perfectly aligned/skewed, but with the oversized dish it works.
Latest News: During a recent 7 hour thunderstorm I kept *all* non-2D channels the whole time. The signal only degraded by enough to lose ITV/BBC for 10 minutes during some extremely heavy rain, but I was more concerned with
the flooding in the cellar - that's how heavy the rain was. That was a once per year storm, so I count my installation as 100% reliable now.

So I've now updated my system and have bought a Sat motor for my DBOX 1 (a bargain from Ebay for 28 euro incl. postage). It was easy to install and I can now easily change between Astra 28.5 and 19.2. I would be able to receive any number of satellites with the motor, however I've had to position my sat dish on my balcony so that the neighbours don't complain and so I can't get as far as Hotbird 13.0.
The DVB 2000 software on the DBox is very good, changing channels is very quick. I got all the settings for the channels from www.xandy.de which I was able to transfer directly into the Dbox from my PC via serial cable. I can get all BBC channels in top quality even in bad weather (appart from the one time that the dish and stand were blown about 3ft accross the balcony in very stormy weather !)
The only thing I need now is ITV & C4. A friend in the UK can provide me with a viewing card and so I'm going to try to get a Digibox. I'll be back in the UK in a few weeks so hopefully I can get one then. I think maybe running 2 receivers in parallel (DBox & Digibox) may be a bit difficult to set up. However I'll need the Dbox to control the sat motor, as the Digibox does not support the Disceq protocoll which is needed to control the mtor. I'll let you know how I get on.

Just to let you know, on my 60cm dish, Sony sky box, the BBC channels are back ! After some days of only getting BBC2 via channel 962 and manually BBC London and without tempering the dish. At the moment it is raining here in Cologne/Germany- so has something changed ? Have the BBC's new 2D-Transponders increased in Power?

I have a Grundig receiver (don't know model type) that I already repaired as the power supply was broken, which is a standard fault in Grundig I believe.
My dish size is 80CM diameter. LNB type is a standard digital LNB from Samsung bought in local shop, located 40miles south of Hanover. I receive all free2view channels without problems.
A friend of mine also has a Grundig receiver, the normal Sky minidish & LNB that was fitted as standard too it (type unknown), also located in the same area as me. He has a Sky contract and receives free2view & Sky One etc. no problem. On both systems the signal strength meter on the on screen display shows about 80-90%.
Just wanted to say thanks for such a great site. It has helped me and a few friends of mine a great deal in getting info about our Sky reception for getting reception & dealing with a few problems that were encountered. I, and a few members of HM forces stationed in Germany thank you.

I pick up all BBC ( with local variants ) and the other 150 other channels broadcasted. The Sat installer said because of the bad dish I'd probably loose reception in bad whether but in fact apart from major storms and cloud cover ( where I loose my Astra 1 as well ) my kit soldiers on. He said I could replace my bad 1.2 M Dish with a good 1 meter and probably get 60% Quality, 60% Strength on Astra2D only after professional alignment and top quality LNB. For anyone interested the Installer is a Brit who is on the German Britboard ( Auf wiedersehen website ) and goes under the name of Satman, he knows his shit and without him I wouldn't and couldn't have gotten the reception, doing it by hand just didn't cut it.

Firstly I would like to say thank you for running the astra2d Website. This is one of the most useful sites I've found on the web in a long time. Anyway let me give you some details of my set-up. I'm afraid I can't give you much technical jargon - Satellites are not my field. To start, we now have great reception of Astra 2D. We are based in Moerfelden-Walldorf, Hessen, Germany (or just south of Frankfurt Airport if it makes things easier to find).
I know very little about our dish, except what I can see. It's from a firm called Kreiling and I guess (looking out the loft window at it !) that it's either 80 or 90 cm). We had been watching free to air German programs for a few months until I read your website. I had a brief conversation with a local Satellite installer (thanks for the German web page link you gave - At least I had something to give to the guy). My German is not great but I understood that the satellite
dish was already set-up for Astra 2D, we just needed a decoder that could cope with DiSEqC. As luck would have it I had bought a Nokia Mediamaster 150S from the local MediaMarkt for 139 Euro. I chose the Mediamaster mainly
because the box it came in had everything written in English - which was a good choice in the end.
After I'd finished chatting to the Satellite guy I found the installation manual for the Nokia and through a combination of guessing and manual-reading I managed to configure the box to take both sites. So now our daughter can happily watch Teletubbies on KiKa (the German children's channel) at 9:00 and in English on Cbeebies later in the morning!

88cm Dish with MTI 0.6dB seems to be the lower limit for Astra 2D on my Grundig GDS200-1. Only light clouds allowed, but even then there are some dropouts sometimes. No reception of Astra 2D with my other digibox Grundig GDS200. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to install a bigger dish.

I got hold of a Thompson universal LNB and fitted it to my 60cm Thompson dish. Watching the signal meter on my TV from my Grundig receiver I aligned the dish to get 100% signal strength and about 75% quality.
Since alignment the area has experienced some heavy downpours and I have yet to loose any channels as I did previously using a Sky mini dish.

My equipment for receiving Astra 28°E includes a 85cm dish from Technisat with standard LNB and a Panasonic Sky digibox. Unfortunately I can't receive anything of the horizontal Astra 2D transponders. The vertical Astra 2D transponders break up most of the time, especially evenings and in good weather. The following transponders can be received with only minor dropouts: 10.788v, 10.818v, 10.847v and 10.876v. I'm already planning to replace my 85cm dish with a 125cm one, but am not sure, if I really can receive all Astra 2D channels with it.

Reception of all programmes, including the BBC channels, is fine. The receiver gives me readings
of 7.8--8.0, in line with the RTE programmes on that footprint. That compares to a signal of 9.1 on the `old' transponders. The highest signal strength I found is for BBC Radio Cymru (10.2), an exception as all other channels on the Europe-wide transponders (e.g. CNN, or BBC Parliament) are at 9.0--9.1. Reception gets problematic in cloud-covered conditions and heavy rain and can then break up temporarily.

80cm dish, 0.6 double LNB feeding (a) Amstrad DRX 100 in the living room for BBC, ITV, Channels 4 and 5 and (b) Nokia Mediamaster in my office for BBC radio.
Dish aligned by an installer with a digital meter and spectrum analyzer who reported 70dB signal level. Result - excellent quality radio signals and crystal clear TV pictures.
The 2d footprint shows Stuttgart as on the borderline for a 90cm dish but most reports I have seen and advice from Bavaria Satellite suggests the footprint lines are on the "conservative" side so you may well find a smaller size dish will work that is officially shown. The important point is alignment and LNB skew and unless you are very knowledgeable you'll need help from a good installer. At least in Germany you may have to make sure they know you want to receive digital signals from 2d since they normally install dishes for 1A (German channels).
I would imagine most people in Germany should be able to get 2d e.g. München needs 1.20m according to the footprint but you hear of people getting reception with 60cm. Certainly a bigger dish increases efficiency by around 17% in area for each increase in size 60 - 75cm, 75 - 90cm etc.

Both receivers give good results in all but the worst weather conditions when the 2D channels drop out. The dish was installed to get ITV and has always given + excellent performance. No impact was noticed when the BBC switched to 2D. A 60cm mesh dish with a universal LNB, an Echostar 3000 receiver. This dish has been extremely carefully aligned and also picks up 2D quite reliably although I experience drop out in bad weather sooner with this dish than I do with the 1.2m. This set up works well with the BBC radio stations and with anything that is FTA on 2D (e.g. the occasional tests of ITV2).

Equipment: 1m Gibertini Dish equipped with 3 Quattro LNBs + 9/4 Multiswitch. 2 LNBs are from Invacom 0.3dB used for 13E and 19.2E. The LNB used to receive Astra2D is a no name 0.6dB LNB (25 Euros) on the far end of the multifeed. I had tested all of the LNBs and it turned out that the no name one was better performant than the others.
Signal quality on Astra2D is 60% under normal conditions and 50% at night or during rain. The receiver will start resolving images at 30%, so there seems to be enough headroom. Attached is a photograph.
One other interesting item, I only hooked up VL and HL for Astra2D and VH, HH for Astra1 on 19E to the multiswitch. So I only need a 9 input multiswitch instead of a 13 input one

I changed from the MTI blue line lnb to the "chess". I was surprised of the additional about 5..10 % more quality reading.
Transponders: all vertical transonders from at least 20% up to 35% signal quality, reception of these transponders possible to 95% of time signal gets lost in heavy rain or snow condition.
No horizontal transponders all time, they show about 15..19% signal quality, on IRCI5400 pictures would appear from 20% signal quality reading 120cm needed (report will follow).
